About Natural Mystics Smoke Shop

Natural Mystics, originally know as Natural Mystics Reggae Shop, opened in the summer of 2001 by native lifelong Fredericksburg residents and high school sweethearts, Katarina and Brian Fletcher. Brian had been a reggae music fan since he was 13 years old and was an Environmental Science major who graduated from the local Mary Washington College, which has now become the University of Mary Washington. Katarina was an International Affairs major with a concentration in development studies and also a graduate of Mary Washington College. In their free time, they loved to go to live reggae shows and concerts.

During their travels in Costa Rica and Puerto Rico, as well as along the east coast of the U.S., they found that they always enjoyed shopping at small cultural gift shops, music stores and smoke shops. These travels, along with their desire to work for themselves, inspired them to open a little store of their own in their hometown of Fredericksburg, Virginia in order to promote the Caribbean “one love” lifestyle in which they had become so fond. After having tested the waters by vending at the University of Mary Washington Multicultural Fair, sponsoring and promoting successful local reggae shows and founding the benefit concert known as One Love for Africa, which later became the One Love Peace Festival, they decided to take the plunge. They found an available storefront in the heart of downtown Fredericksburg, located at 1002 Prince Edward Street, and this has been Natural Mystics’ home ever since.

Over the years, Natural Mystics hosted local reggae shows with artists such SOJA, Midnite, The Itals, Abijah, Jah Works, Johnstone, Crucial Elements, Jah Revelations, Isaac Haile Selassie, The Uplifters, Fredericksburg local rock steady sensation The Transmitters and longtime employee and current store manager DJ Bredren. Natural Mystics the store served several purposes in the Fredericksburg community. Opening one month before the tragedy on 9/11, Natural Mystics served to promote peace and unity by selling peace products, organizing groups to attend peace rallies and assisting local drum circles and Food Not Bombs. The store supported and sold works from local artists as well as imported crafts from around the world. A great selection of reggae, Bob Marley, Grateful Dead, jam band and hippie culture, sustainable hemp, and counter-culture goods also brought a unique shopping experience to the area. For years, Natural Mystics prided itself in carrying one of the largest selections of reggae music in northern Virginia. The little smoke shop also came to be during the budding of the glass pipes movement, and sought to showcase emerging local and regional glass artists as well as introducing work from some of the best glass pipemakers in the U.S. As time went on, some things have changed, like the fact that they no longer sell music due to the demise of the CD industry, and some things thankfully have not. Natural Mystics is still the best source in Fredericksburg for incense and aromatherapy, Bob Marley and Grateful Dead products, hippie clothing, tie-dyes, tapestries, stickers, posters, gypsy jewelry, healing crystals, unique gifts, quality smoking accessories, vaporizers and vape goods, production and heady glass from local, regional and nationwide producers and artists. Come by and enjoy the positive vibes of this Fredericksburg landmark. Peace, love and blessings.
