In 1921, Federal Cigar's original chief tobacconist, Mr. Goodman, purchased the last United Tobacco, located in downtown Portsmouth. Mr. Goodman was a cigar enthusiast and wanted to keep the shop alive. He changed the name to Federal Cigar and operated the business until his retirement in 1960, when he sold to Harold Silverman. During Mr. Silverman's ownership, Federal Cigar became a center for politics, current events and town business.

Today, Federal Cigar is one of the oldest running cigar shops in America – a distinction which gives us great pride. We carry the largest, most extensive collection of cigars and fine tobacco available today from plantations in the countries of Nicaragua, Dominican Republic and Honduras. Our unparalleled experience and industry connections have helped our small Portsmouth shop expand throughout southeastern New Hampshire. In 2013, we diversified our business by expanding into the vapor and electronic cigarette industry, establishing Cloud 9 Vapor. The following year, we enhanced our customers experience and enjoyment by incorporating full-service cigar bars and separate vape tasting bars in all of our locations.
